Kiwanis Club Awards Scholarships

The Kiwanis Club of Portsmouth recently awarded scholarships to Megan L. Turner and Amber Windsor. Turner, pictured second from left, and Ambrose, not pictured, were selected from 31 applicants. Turner is a Portsmouth West High School graduate who plans to become a Registered Nurse where she can realize her desire to help and care for people. Windsor, also from PWHS, was unable to attend the presentation. She will major in Clinical Psychology at Shawnee State University and continue on to get her Masters and Doctorate at The Ohio State University. She plans to work with children at a juvenile detention center or as a Junior High School counselor.

Applications were received from Scioto County area high school students who will be attending Shawnee State University. A big thank you to Dave Fowler, pictured left, and his committee, pictured beginning to the right of Windsor, Nancy Ross, Jean Taylor, Julie Ramey and Todd Medley. Not pictured are Jennifer Chaffin, Diane Boster, Harry Weinbrecht, Donna Wolery and Kawannah Worthington.

School Supplies Presented
School Supplies Presented

Teachers often purchase supplies for students who cannot afford to buy or run out of supplies early in the school year. Becky Marasek (right) spearheaded the idea to help out by purchasing supplies for Portsmouth and West Portsmouth schools and hopes to continue this project. Coat and glove donationMaking A Difference In Children’s Lives

Children of the Portsmouth area will be warmer this winter thanks to our club’s generosity in purchasing hats and gloves to fight the winter chill. They will be on school buses and given to those in need. Poinsettia Sales

We are once again selling seven different types of poinsettias. Kara Tieman and Eric Bloomfield are heading up this project. Orders MUST BE FAXED IN BY NOON ON MON., NOV. 26TH to (740) 354-6213 or to DESCO Portsmouth office to Kara. Cost of the flowers are $10 each and will be delivered to the Ramada on Wed., Nov. 28th. Our goal is to sell 500.

Gov. Champer Presents AwardGov. Champer Presents Award

Governor Cindy Champer was on hand at the Division 9 Council Meeting Sunday, Sept. 23 in Chillicothe and presented Lt. Gov. Ralph Nolfi with the Past International President’s Award. Div. 9 First Lady, Judy Nolfi, holds the medallion while Ralph holds his plaque. A $500 donation to the First Gent’s Children’s Hospital project in honor of Ralph’s service as Lt. Gov.

First Gentleman Fred Franklin and Governor Cindy Champer present Division 9 Lieutenant Governor Ralph Nolfi with an “Outstanding Support” award at the Ohio District Convention in Aurora this past August. Ralph is one of only four Lieutenant Governors receiving this award. Congratulations Ralph! Very well deserved!

Club Gift BasketClub Takes Basket to District Convention

The District Convention will be held in Aurora, Ohio, August 10 - 12. Lt. Gov. Ralph and 1st Lady Judy Nolfi will be attending and delivering the Division 9 Gift Basket with an Ohio State Theme. Each club was asked to donate a minimal amount to purchase the items. Contents of the basket are as follows: Ohio State Desk Clock, Money Clip, Car Flag, Party Tray, Partitioned Snack Tray, Insulated Glasses, Micro Throw, CD Case, “Fight Song” Key Chain, and Sunglasses - valued at $100. A “Bonus” item, donated by the Kiwanis Club of Portsmouth, is an Ohio State Football autographed by Archie Griffin. Judy Dever, owner of From The Antique in Wheelersburg, donated the basket and organized and wrapped the basket. Some of the Individual Clubs in Division 9 are also providing themed baskets. Proceeds will benefit Children’s Miracle Network.

Toni and KimClub Welcomes New Members

Club Gives to Greenlawn CemeteryClub Gives to Greenlawn Cemetery

Kiwanis of Portsmouth has made a $1000 donation to the City of Portsmouth to be used in the purchasing of security cameras and lighting for Greenlawn Cemetery. Many headstones have been vandalized in recent months and the city is in need of funds to help deter vandals. President-Elect Wayne Kempf (far right) presents the check to Mayor Jim Kalb while Kiwanian Al Oliver (far left) and Dept. of Public Service Director, Chris Murphy, look on. Kalb thanked Kiwanis for stepping up and seeing a need in the community.

Vickie Mains, Chair of our Chopin Committee, introduced the winners of this year’s Chopin Competition which was held Saturday, May 5th at the Southern Ohio Museum and Cultural Center. The winners were announced at the club meeting instead of after the competition.

Participants study piano under the direction of Dara Henry, Mary Smalley and Kimberly Patrick. Dara and Mary were in attendance at the club meeting.

Pancake Day 2007

Pancake Day 2007, the club's biggest fund-raiser of the year, will be held from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., April 18 at the Friend's Community Center. Tickets will be $5 each. Vickie Mains has a packet of tickets for EVERY member. A sign-up sheet will begin circulating next week and ALL members are strongly urged to work at least one shift.

Make A Difference Day
Make A Difference Day Project

Tom Horr (not pictured), Wayne Thompson, Diane Boster and Wayne Kempf delivered cupcakes and juice to 80-90 children, most of whom were Head Start, at West End Day Care Center, Fri., Oct. 27th. This project was in conjunction with Kroger.
